Call to Worship
Psalm 85:10-13 serves as our call to worship this morning. What do these words and images mean to you? How do they come together? How do they come together in the person and work of Jesus Christ?
“O Little Town of Bethlehem”
Why did God choose to be born in a little town?
What are your hopes and fears?
What sins need to be cast out so Christ can enter your heart?
Advent Wreath
Today we light the candle of Peace. Is peace simply the absence of conflict, or is it more than that? Do you feel peaceful? What does it mean to call Jesus the Prince of Peace?
Confession
How can confession lead to peace?
First Scripture Reading from Micah 5:2-5a
Why is Bethlehem described as “one of the little clans of Judah” (NRSV)? Who else is from Bethlehem? Why are rulers so often described as shepherds in scripture? How will the people achieve security and peace?
Offering
How is God calling you to share your gifts?
Choral Anthem: Away in a Manger
Why was Jesus laid in a manger? Why is he described as the “little lord?” Do you think Jesus cried? Wouldn’t it freak out his parents if “no crying he makes?”
Second Scripture Reading: Luke 2:1-20
What is comforting and what is challenging about these words? What is familiar and what is new?
Sermon: Turning to Bethlehem
Do you feel safe and secure…
Physically?
Mentally?
Financially?
Relationally?
Spiritually?
Where do you put your trust?
Who do you turn to in times of trouble?
Affirmation of Faith
When we affirm our faith using the Nicene Creed, we are joining our voices with countless saints who have gone before us? What does it mean to you to affirm your belief in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit using this creed?
The Lord’s Supper
Bethlehem means “house of bread.” During his ministry, Jesus claimed to be the bread of God which came down from heaven (John 6). During his last supper with his disciples he told them to break bread together, saying this is my body broken for you. What does it mean to you to know that God sent his Son to live with us, die for us, and rise again so that we might live in him both now and forever?
